Summary
CASER researchers led and will continue to work on a series of analyses on social and political issues in Hong Kong, based on the comprehensive longitudinal household survey data, Hong Kong Panel Studies of Social Dynamics (HKPSSD) collected in the Special Administrative Region.
HKPSSD is the first-ever city-wide representative, household panel study in Hong Kong that aims to track social and economic changes and their impacts on people’s livelihood in the SAR. The project was implemented by the Center for Applied Social and Economic Research at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, with funding support from Hong Kong Strategic Public Policy Research Scheme and Collaborative Research Fund of the Hong Kong Research Grants Council.
Five waves of data collection were completed in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017/2018, and 2020/2021. The benchmark survey in 2011 includes 7,218 adults and 958 children from 3,214 households, who were subsequently followed up with. In addition, a refreshment sample of 1007 households (including 1960 adults and 477 children) were added in 2014, and the second refreshment survey involving 840 households (including 1,102 adults and 119 children) was added in 2018/19. All main samples and refreshment samples were followed up in 2020/2021 through telephone and online surveys multiple times, with about 1800 each time.
While the project’s initial focus was on family and inequality, survey questions now cover areas such as, population aging and health, community and neighborhood, political participants and national identity, and attitudes toward immigrants, among others. The HKPSSD preserved precious and unique panel data, that would, incidentally, help to unpack the social and political dynamics in a critical decade of Hong Kong’s most recent history.
Current projects based on the HKPSSD include the investigation of social consequences of Hong Kong’s Home Ownership Scheme; the impact of the Occupy Central on longitudinal mental health issues; the dynamics of Hong Kong local identity; neighborhood immigrants changes and identity. These projects utilize multi-level and longitudinal household survey data, together with the census and bi-census data from 1971-2021 (measured every five years), to investigate many critical issues about the trajectory of Hong Kong’s social changes and political dynamics.

Study Purpose
The primary goal of the HKPSSD is to generate a representative sample of Hong Kong households that would allow us to track and explain social and economic changes in Hong Kong and their impacts on its residents. The survey is designed to collect both household-level information, such as housing conditions and household economic activities, and individual characteristics, such as education, marriage and children, employment and careers, physical and psychological health, and social activities. Solid analyses drawing on the HKPSSD data are expected to improve the well-being of Hong Kong residents by facilitating evidence-based policies targeting key social issues, such as inequality and poverty, education, employment, marriage, and family.
Study Design
HKPSSD is a longitudinal household study of a city-representative sample of Hong Kong residents from 2011 to 2021, covering more than 5,500 households (cumulative) from all districts of Hong Kong. Over 10 years of data collection, data have been collected from all qualified family members through both household interview, telephone interview, and online self-report. In addition, existing databases with information about respondents' neighborhoods and communities have been merged with public geographical data released by Hong Kong government, facilitating the contextual understanding of complex modern metropolis. During the past ten years of data collection, several waves of election, social movements, and the COVID-19 pandemic happened in Hong Kong. The HKPSSD provides a valuable historical record of Hong Kong at an important era.
Sample
The HKPSSD adopts as its sampling frame the Frame of Quarters maintained by the Hong Kong C&SD, which covers the whole non-institutionalized population on land in Hong Kong, amounting to about 99% of all Hong Kong residents.
With the high-quality sampling frame, the HKPSSD adopts a stratified random sampling method paying special attention to the representativeness of our sample in terms of geographic locality and SES. The specific sampling procedure consists of four steps.
Step 1: Specify the target sample size and the sampling frame (3200 households)
Step 2: Construct a neighborhood socioeconomic index (CA SEI) for Hong Kong (Wu, 2016)
Step 3: Stratify the 70,000 addresses by CA SEI
Step 4: Draw a sample of addresses
